Tips to reduce food waste at home

The average household throws away up to $2,500 worth of food every year* and small changes can make a big difference.
It’s Food Waste Action Week, so we’re sharing some tips on how you can reduce waste at your place and make the most of the food you buy.
Wasting less food saves money, reduces emissions, and helps build a more food-secure Australia. Together, small actions add up to big change.
Try these simple ways to waste less:
🥕 Check your fridge before shopping
📅 Plan meals around what you already have
❄️ Freeze food you won’t use in time
🍞 Freeze leftover bread — toast from frozen
🥗 Have a weekly “leftover night”
👀 Store food where you can see it

Some of the most wasted foods are also the easiest to save.
Set yourself a Crisper Drawer Challenge and try cooking with what you already have:
🥦 Soft veggies can be turned into a stir-fry or soup
🥭 Overripe fruit can flavour smoothies or pancakes
🌿Leftover herbs can be frozen in olive oil
🫑Odds & ends of vegetables can make a tasty frittata
