Somewhere over the rainbow

They say to look for a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow…but at Perth’s Rainbow Community Services food hampers and hardworking volunteers are the treasures to be found.
Rainbow Community Services Coordinator Anthea Gibellini said they made up to 160 hampers a week for families in need of food relief, using food donated by SecondBite.
Anthea said the biggest growth in demand for food relief was coming from working families and seniors, who are struggling to meet the increased costs of living.
SecondBite delivers to Rainbow Community Services every Monday, and the charity also collects donated food directly from supermarkets.
Through our partnership, the service received more than 131,000 kgs of rescued food for free in 2024 – enough for more than 262,000 meals.
And in the first five months of 2025 we’ve delivered more than 42,000 kgs of food – enough to make 84,000 meals.

Rescued food from SecondBite meets increasing demand
SecondBite’s support has helped Rainbow Community Services expand their reach over the last few years, ensuring that no one is turned away.
“We are incredibly grateful for our ongoing relationship and partnership with SecondBite,” Anthea said.
“The unwavering support has been instrumental as we continue to grow and meet the increasing demand for food relief over the past few years.”
“Thanks to SecondBite’s help, we’ve been able to expand the number of hampers we provide, ensuring that we never have to turn families away due to lack of resources”

Passionate volunteers are the heart of food relief program
Rainbow Community Services provide food relief three days a week at their Lansdale and Girrawheen locations
Their team of passionate volunteers pack fresh food hampers, serve meals, and offer heartfelt support to people facing financial hardship.
From food relief to seniors’ exercise groups, their commitment to care runs deep in the community.
Volunteer Susan Morrison shares the heart behind their work…
“Volunteering in the food ministry makes you realise the extent and effects of the cost of living.” she said.
“I’ve made new friends while making a positive impact on the community.”
“Chatting to the clients receiving assistance gives us positive feedback & we’ve built relationships with some of the regulars who are now comfortable telling us the struggles they face.”
