Sharing is caring at House of Refuge 

The volunteers at House of Refuge radiate joy as they unpack donations from the SecondBite truck to help feed people in need from their community.  

The charity in the Melbourne suburb of Hallam – whose motto is “Sharing is Caring” – receives donations once a week from SecondBite to support their food relief service. 

A recent delivery from the SecondBite truck provided 1800kgs of food, including fresh fruit and vegetables – such as watermelons, potatoes, mandarins and peas, pantry items and frozen food. 

The produce is unloaded by the dedicated volunteers onto tables and into fridges and freezers and they open their doors every Thursday morning to people in need of food relief.  

House of Refuge Volunteer Collette said they had a broad range of people accessing the donated food – from refugees to people struggling with the rising cost of living.  

“We’ve got people coming in who have full time jobs saying I can’t feed my family,” Collette said. 

Collette said between 200-300 people came every Thursday to access the donated food  and staples, such as potatoes, were some of the most popular items. 

Demand for the service is so great, Collette said they have people lining up for hours waiting for them to open. 

“Every week the queues get bigger and bigger,” she said.
