Bequests
Leaving a Bequest to SecondBite
It is recommended that you seek professional advice from a solicitor or financial adviser before drafting your Will or adding a codicil.
Bequests of property are exempt from Capital Gains Tax and donations to SecondBite are tax deductible.
Types of Bequest
There are four types of bequests available:
Specific: a specified gift which can be money, property, life insurance policy, stocks or shares.
Residual: after prior bequests and other liabilities have been allocated, the remainder (residue) of the estate can be left to SecondBite.
Percentage or fractional: after prior bequests and other liabilities have been allocated, a percentage of the remainder (residue) of the estate can be left to SecondBite.
Whole estate: the entire estate can be left to SecondBite. This usually occurs when there are no other beneficiaries.
The option of a Codicil
A codicil is a supplement or addition to an existing Will, which in effect, becomes part of that Will. It modifies, explains or otherwise qualifies the Will in some way. This is an attractive option for many individuals as it is simple and does not involve having to re-write the Will itself. It is a legal document and must be signed and witnessed by two independent witnesses.
Thank you!
When you leave a gift in your Will to change lives through SecondBite’s work, please advise us. This gives us the opportunity to thank you during your life time and plan effectively for SecondBite’s future. (Of course, you may remain anonymous if you wish.)
SecondBite is endorsed by the Australian Taxation Office as an Income Tax Exempt Charity (ITEC) with Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) status.
