SecondBite exists to provide access to fresh, nutritious food for people in need across Australia. We do this by rescuing and redistributing surplus fresh food, building community capacity in food skills and nutrition and advocating for an end to food insecurity.

Browse through our extensive support opportunities...

      Ride the van

Spend a day at the front-line of operations assisting in pickups and deliveries in a SecondBite van. Travel with one of our experienced drivers and work with them as they collect fresh food from food donors and distribute it to recipient organisations. Monday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday

Volunteer numbers: 1 or 2 volunteers per van, subject to van types operating on day.

Please note: Due to limited availability, volunteers from supporter or potential supporter organisations are preferenced.

Time commitment: 8am sharp to return at around 3pm.

      Assist the Kensington warehouse

Assist with SecondBite’s daily warehouse operations and work side by side with our job pathway Trainees, receiving incoming food donations and packing it ready for re-distribution. Mondays and Thursdays only. Other days possible, subject to operational needs and position availability.

      Volunteer numbers2 per day

Time commitment: 9.45am to 12 noon

Commit to a weekly delivery of food, using your own vehicle. Drop in to SecondBite’s Kensington warehouse at an agreed time, Monday to Friday, to pick up manageable boxes of fresh produce for delivery to between one and three local charitable community food programs.

Volunteer numbers: As opportunities become available.

      Time commitment: Morning or afternoon.

      Market collections

SecondBite collects each week from major fresh produce markets.

Dandenong spots are most often available, followed by Preston with spots usually open. South Melbourne and Queen Victoria spots are limited and Prahran is fully staffed by Rotary Volunteers. Volunteers meet a SecondBite driver with one of our vans on site and use trolleys to collect food donations from stall holders. This is satisfying work that brings volunteers into close contact with our operations.

Volunteer numbers: As opportunities become available at preferred market.

Time commitment: typically mid to late afternoon for 2 hours.

      Community Connect Facilitator

Involvement in SecondBite's Community Connect program brings volunteers into close contact with both food donors and recipient organisations. In addition, the Coles Community Food with SecondBite program works largely through Community Connect in regional areas and provides volunteers with an opportunity for in-depth participation that makes a direct and real difference to the success of the program.

Volunteer numbers1 per rural region in which we are operating, subject to availability.

Time commitment: 3 - 5 hours per week.

      Skilled volunteering

Volunteering opportunities exist for those wishing to assist with our administrative work or on a special project requiring particular skills and expertise.

Volunteer numbers2 - 3 at any given day/time, depending on duty undertaken.

Time commitment: a few hours up to all day, or period of time as discussed with volunteer.

Be the face of SecondBite at events throughout the year: help create awareness and promote SecondBite’s work to the general public, or help SecondBite raise funds, launch new initiatives and say thank you to supporters.

Time commitment: approx. 7.30am to 3.30pm, or other times depending on activity

      Expos and Exhibitions

SecondBite takes part in metropolitan and regional food and community-related exhibitions large and small. Examples include the Good Food & Wine shows, Harvest n’ Graze, Taste of Melbourne, Regional Farmers Markets and local council community and seminar exhibitions. Volunteers assist on the day as well as event planning and administration leading up to and after the exhibition.

Volunteer numbers: Varies depending on length of exhibition, usually two volunteers together, or a SecondBite staff member with one volunteer assisting. Volunteers typically do a half day shift for one or more days as desired

Time commitment: Depends on exhibition opening time and location. Half day shifts in metropolitan locations and full day for regional.

      Workplace fundraising project

Imagine what your workplace fundraiser will look like and get in contact us - we can help you make it a huge success.

Volunteer numbers: depending on scope of your project.

Time commitment: a few hours up to all day.

Launches and supporter thank you events

A new report, partnership, end of year celebration or other milestone in SecondBite’s work takes place from time to time at SecondBite’s premises or at a relevant off-site venue. Events include speeches and light hospitality and run for 1 to 3 hours. Volunteers are a great help with greeting guests, hospitality tasks, set up and pack down.
