SecondBite exists to provide access to fresh, nutritious food for people in need across Australia. We do this by rescuing and redistributing surplus fresh food, building community capacity in food skills and nutrition and advocating for an end to food insecurity.

Coles Community Food with SecondBite

Over 600 stores now participate in the Coles Community Food with SecondBite program, which is over 75% of all Coles stores nationwide. Thanks to the generous support of Coles, SecondBite has redistributed over 10 million kilograms of surplus fresh food, which equates to over 20 million meals. SecondBite thanks Coles for its ongoing support, and looks forward to expanding the relationship with more Coles stores nationwide in the future.

Background

SecondBite and Coles began working together in August 2010, building the right process to ensure safe and reliable donations of surplus fresh food from Coles stores. A simple process was developed during the pilot to allow us to roll this program out nationwide. Coles Community Food with SecondBite is an exciting food rescue initiative whereby Coles has partnered with SecondBite to donate fruit, vegetables, meat and bakery items which do not meet their in-store quality standards, but which are still safe and nutritious to eat. This is a national program with a local focus, enabling communities around Australia access to fresh surplus food that would otherwise go to waste.

National Partners

In September 2011, SecondBite and Coles officially announced our national partnership and to date, the program has provided over 10 million kilograms of fresh food donations, which equates to over 20 million meals for people who are doing it tough in the community. We are thrilled to work with Coles on this major partnership. They have demonstrated to be leaders in the field, through actively embedding the program in their organisational culture and working with us to improve as we continue to grow. Coles have also embraced our affiliated agencies, through volunteering their time, resources and assisting with food rescue efforts which helps support local community food programs that benefit from fresh produce donations. Direct Delivery

In major metropolitan areas, SecondBite collects from stores using refrigerated vans through either our Direct Delivery model or through partners such as Food Rescue WA, Foodbank NT, Food Barn, Salvation Army NSW and Parramatta Mission. In all other regional and remote areas of Australia, SecondBite Community Connect™ is employed.

Community Connect

Coles has chosen to work exclusively with SecondBite because of our expertise in fresh food rescue, our focus on food safety procedures and quality control, plus our unique SecondBite Community Connect™ collection model for regional and remote areas. This model of fresh food re-distribution facilitates a connection between a local food donor, in this case a Coles store, and a local community food program.

Coles have also donated very significant volumes of food to support many rural Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

Collaboration

At SecondBite, we advocate strongly for collaboration in the community sector and to this end, we have actively invited other community groups and organisations who have appropriate infrastructure in place, to be a part of the Coles Community Food with SecondBite program and collect from their local Coles stores from around the country.

SecondBite has provided training and guidance to enable these partners to collect from their local Coles stores and looks forward to continuing to build relationships with these existing and future partners around Australia.

Our Environment

In addition to this, we are looking after our environment, by rescuing this amount of fresh food from landfill, we are saving 60,000,000 of CO2 gases from being emitted into the atmosphere, 740,000,000 litres of embedded water and 60,000,000 kilowatts of energy used in the production of the food.
